Strong Passwords You Can Remember

[I can’t find a link to the original article.]

Having a secure password is complicated:

Here is an easy way to meet these requirements, which only requires you to remember one password for all your various sites.

The principle is simple. You choose one hard-to-remember password that you memorize and then you add letters from the names of each website to vary it.

To get started:

  1. go to HostGator’s Password Generator
  2. uncheck “Alphanumeric Only” and choose 8 characters
  3. copy and paste the password to a new document

This will be your base password – this is all you have to remember.

Step 2:

Pick two places in the password (2 & 6 for example):

  1. Add the second letter of the name of the site you’re logging into at the first of the two places.
  2. Add the first letter of the name of the site you’re logging into at the second of the two places.

Example:

  1. HostGator gave us BV}egsVG
  2. Choose places 1 and 3 (from 1, 2 and 3)
  3. For facebook.com, put the second letter, “a” in the 1 position: aBV}egsVG
  4. For facebook.com, I put the first letter, “f” in the 3 position
  5. Final password for facebook.com: aBfV}egsVG

You can really use any system you want. The important part is that there is a base password that you remember (BV}eegVG) that you vary for each site using letters from the site name.

It’s easy to remember and very secure.

If one of those sites gets hacked, your password for all the others is still safe.
