Like trying to ban Legos

Some people want to ban AR-15′s, and don’t understand why anyone would want to own one.

This makes many other people very angry.

Characterizing the AR-15 as an assault rifle misses the point of why it is popular.

Time Magazine:

The shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., bore many of the hallmarks of the other school shootings that have shocked the nation over the course of the last weeks, months and years.

Among those similarities was the weapon used by accused shooter Nikolas Cruz: the AR-15.

How did the AR-15 become notorious? Matt Pickering :

Until the 1990s, the AR-15 was a footnote rifle, used by a minority of gun owners.

Only when attempts to restrict and ban it did the firearm rise to prominence along with other “scary looking” firearms like the AK pattern rifles.

The Federal 10 year ban on such rifles caused the rifle to enter the public consciousness.

Why the AR-15 stays popular:

As builders and makers dove into it, they found its ease of manufacture and demand to be undeniable.

This modularity has resulted in the AR-15 being the “Lego of the Gun World”.

Because simple tools can be used to work on it, endless variations, from pistols to precision rifles to everything in between, in many calibers, have been produced.

This has kept the platform fresh and able to adapt to changing desires and market conditions.

The gun is so simple and easy to work on that people routinely build them on their kitchen tables with minimal skill.

No other gun is as amateur gunsmith friendly as the AR-15.
