Is Recycling Worth It?
I had a sneaking suspicion that recycling was a scam. Everywhere I’ve lived, recycling programs have been carried out in a lackluster way.
People put all kinds of crap in the bins, and the workers who collected them don’t seem to care.

According to the Economist, recycling is not particularly interesting from an economic standpoint for most cities (which is why I could sense the lack of enthusiasm).

However, it is worth it in the sense that as a whole we have a greatly reduced need to extract new raw materials from the planet.
It’s obviously hard to give a concrete number but my overall sense is that about 20% of our raw material needs are now satisfied by recycling.
