Imagine what TV would look like if each show was ranked only by text visible during the episode. Well, that’s what the Internet is.

John Gruber says:

Once again I say: the web would be better off if browsers had never added support for scripting. Many of the ads you see on legitimate websites today are effectively malware.

This makes sense in a world where the internet is just pages of text.

The internet is just pages of text because that’s the only way Google can read it

The centralized state wanted the world to be “legible”, ie arranged in a way that made it easy to monitor and control. An intact forest might be more productive than an evenly-spaced rectangular grid of Norway spruce, but it was harder to legislate rules for, or assess taxes on.
