They’re not from Norway
Here’s a list of 2016 and 2017 US immigrant Nobel prize winners:
- 2017 Physics: Rainer Weiss (born in Germany)
- 2017 Chemistry: Joachim Frank (born in Germany)
- 2016 Physics: David J. Thouless, F. Duncan M. Haldane & J. Michael Kosterlitz (born in the U.K)
- 2016 Chemistry: Sir J. Fraser Stoddart (born in the U.K.)
- 2016 Economics: Oliver Hart (born in the U.K.) & Bengt Holmström (born in Finland)
With Donald Trump basing a large part of his presidential campaign on anti-immigrant feeling, and with calls for immigration controls dominating the Brexit debate, Sir J Fraser Stoddart, Scottish-born, naturalised American citizen and 2016 Nobel Chemistry Prize winner, has told a US website: “I think the United States is what it is today largely because of open borders.“
I’m not sure that pointing to immigrant Nobel winners really counts as pushing back at Trump:
“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump said.
He then suggested that the United States should instead bring more people from countries such as Norway.
